At Clarke's Creek, near here, on the night of February 13, 1779, American troops commanded by Col. Elijah Clark, Col. John Dooly and Col. Andrew Pickens, encamped. Very early the next morning, they launched a surprise attack on the British forces under Colonel Boyd, encamped at Kettle Creek, four miles away. The victory prevented the British troops from joining the notorious McGirth, and broke their devastating march through Georgia.
From US 78B/GA 10B and GA 44, travel west on US 78B/GA 10B, joining US 78, 5.6 miles. Turn right on the road at the end of the airport runway, travel 1 mile and bear left at the fork. Follow road 7.3 miles to marker.
